Fall of the Berlin Wall

Fall of the Berlin wall symbolized the end of cold war. There were some reforms were happening in Soviet Union and in other communist countries in late 1980's. The East German head of the state was resigned in October 18th, 1989.

The border between the east and west Germany was opened from 9th November 1989. The lift of travel restriction to west was announced by the new East German government in a press conference held on that day.

With that notice thousands of East Berlin people gathered to the check point and demand the guards to open the gates. Even though check points guards were not properly informed about this decision, people who gathered over there were able to influence and open the gates.

With the opening of gates, thousands of East Berlin residences crossed the boarder and entered to east. West Berlin was in a party atmosphere on that day.

Later the East German government established some check points to visit to the west. Even though the government tried to maintain the wall, some times people used to demolish or break some parts of that. The Berlin wall remained some time until lots of political changes happened and German was united.

Today only a few parts of the Berlin wall is remaining to see. Still some people are keeping Berlin wall parts as souvenirs.
