History, Australia
First attempt for the
settlement in area was done by Lt. David Collins attempted in year 1803 but it
was a failure. First permanent settlement was done in 1835 by John Batman by
the Yarra river in year 1835 and in 1837 this area was named after British
Prime Minister Lord Melbourne.
In 1851 Melbourne
became the capitol after the colony of Victoria was officially proclaimed. The
Victorian population was grown rapidly after finding of gold around 1854. This
city also became to consider as a rich area.
In 1901 The Melbourne city was chosen as the temporary capitol of the new
commonwealth of Australia. There were lots of immigrants came from the
countries like Italy and Greece in 1950's. Melbourne hosted Olympic games in
1956 and that was the first time the game hosted in Southern Hemisphere.
