Toronto History
Toronto, "toran-ten" or
"The meeting Place" in Huron terms, was a trading center in 1600's. In early
days this was populated by Seneca Indians and later by Mississauga Indians.
French dominated the
area of Toronto between 1615 and 1760 and the French Fort was build in that
time. Later British captured the area and in 1793 the area was renamed as
"York" by Sir John Simcoe. This was consider as a capitol of Upper Canada at
that time. The famous Yonge Street was build in 1796 by him also. This is
consider as the longest street in the world. The time between 1812 and 1815 was
the period with war in York can American soldiers had burned the city. After
the peace agreement in 1814, this became more populated area.

The "York" was renamed as "Toronto" in 1834 and William Lyon Mackenzie became
the first mayor. The railway construction, banking facilities and other
commercial activities started between 1840s -1850s. The great Toronto fire
occurred in 1904, April 09th and it destroyed twenty acres of the city.
The famous CN Tower was constructed in 1976 and it became the world tallest
building with 1815 feet.
Nowadays the city of Toronto consider as a one of the best cities to live.
